Honeymoons & proposals

Picking the right island is only step one. For honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals, knowing how to talk to the resort — what is free, what costs extra, and roughly what it costs — avoids a few traps.

Mention the occasion when booking

Mention a honeymoon, anniversary or proposal when booking or checking in — most resorts add a little for free (petals, cake, a local flower crown), no need to ask twice.

Free honeymoon perks usually need a marriage certificate

For free extras like flower-decorated beds or cake, many resorts ask for a marriage certificate from within the last 6–12 months. Bring a copy or digital version and email one to the resort ahead of time.

A traditional Tahitian ceremony is the local signature

Many resorts offer a traditional Tahitian welcome ceremony — outrigger canoe arrival, flower crowns, a blessing from a local elder. It looks spectacular but isn't a legal marriage registration, purely a ceremonial experience, bookable on its own or alongside a proposal / anniversary.

Ask exactly what's in a proposal package

Beach candlelit dinners, private motu setups, and overwater-bungalow proposals are paid add-ons — a full package (setup + dinner + photography) typically runs $2,000–6,000, noticeably pricier than the equivalent in the Maldives. Confirm exactly what's included and the total price by email before you go.

City tax and service charge are on top of the quote

Custom-experience quotes are usually pre-tax — ask directly whether the price includes tax and service charge.

Planning a surprise? Don't use a shared inbox

If you're planning a one-sided proposal, keep all correspondence with the resort on your own email. On arrival, find guest relations or your butler privately to confirm timing and location.

Resort photography usually isn't included in the room rate

A resort photographer typically costs extra — around $400–800 for an hour plus editing (pricier than the Maldives equivalent). On a tighter budget, just book the setup and take your own photos.

Outdoor setups depend on weather, especially trade-wind season

Beach dinners and motu picnics are affected by sea conditions and the trade winds, especially July–September. Ask what the backup plan is before booking — most resorts move things indoors or to the overwater bungalow deck.

Be cautious with "proposal planner" middlemen found on social media

Book custom experiences directly through the resort or a licensed travel agency, using a traceable payment method — avoid personal wire transfers.

Two signals to look for if you want more privacy

Resorts with a high privacy score and mostly overwater-bungalow-plus-private-pool rooms tend to have lower guest density and fewer interruptions. Taha'a is generally quieter than Bora Bora overall — good for honeymooners avoiding crowds.

Roughly what custom experiences cost

Room setup (petals, cake, flower crowns)
Often included in honeymoon perks; standalone roughly US$100–250

Usually free with a marriage certificate; a more elaborate setup costs more.

Floating breakfast
US$80–180 for two

The photogenic breakfast served in the pool; not a standard offering at every resort — confirm it can be arranged before booking.

Beach / private motu candlelit dinner (3–4 courses)
US$350–800 for two

Includes a dedicated server and setup; a private-chef custom menu costs more.

Traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony
US$500–1,500

Includes outrigger-canoe arrival, flower crowns and a local celebrant's blessing; carries no legal marriage standing.

Couples spa (60–90 min)
US$300–550 for two

Some honeymoon packages include one session; book ahead in high season.

Resort photographer (1 hour + editing)
US$400–800

Priced hourly or as a package; outside photographers usually pay a location fee at most resorts.

Full proposal package (setup + dinner + photography)
US$2,000–6,000

Higher at ultra-luxury resorts and in peak season; the grander it is, the earlier you book.

These are common industry ranges, not any one island’s quote. Ultra-luxury islands and peak season run higher, and quotes usually have a service charge and local taxes on top. Most experiences need 2 to 12 weeks’ notice — the grander it is, the earlier you book.
