Coast guide
Mauritius is a volcanic island almost ringed by a continuous fringing reef, with resorts along the coastline, all reachable by road. Picking a coast is really picking the wind and sea (north and west sheltered and calm, east and south exposed), how far from the airport, and whether you want a calm beach, kitesurfing or a quiet cove.

Each ring sits on the average coordinates of the resorts we list. Bigger ring = more resorts; colour is the coast’s most common way to arrive. Open a ring and use the link to jump to its section below.
East Coast
The most upscale stretch of Mauritius, with big lagoons and several flagship resorts
The east coast has 5 resorts on the site: Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Constance Prince Maurice, One&Only Le Saint Géran, LUX* Belle Mare and Four Seasons Anahita, the most concentrated top-tier cluster in Mauritius. It faces the Indian Ocean with lagoons and reef protecting the beaches, but it is more exposed to the south-east trades, so the sea can be livelier in windy months.
Access Private transfer from Plaisance airport (south-east), about 40–60 minutes on our estimates; most resorts arrange pick-ups.
Le Morne
A south-west peninsula and a world-known kitesurfing spot
Le Morne is known for its mountain landform and kitesurfing. The site lists 3 resorts here: St. Regis Mauritius, LUX* Le Morne and Dinarobin Beachcomber. The south-east trades are steadiest from June to September, the main kite and wind sport season; if you want quiet, choose a beach stretch away from the kite crowd.
Access Private transfer, about 70 minutes on our estimates.
North-West Coast
Calmer water and plenty of dining and nightlife nearby
The north-west lists 4 resorts: Trou aux Biches, Westin Turtle Bay, Le Méridien Île Maurice and Royal Palm Beachcomber. The sea is comparatively calm and the restaurants and shops around Grand Baie are close, good for travellers who want options beyond the resort.
Access Private transfer, about 65–75 minutes on our estimates.
South Coast
Closer to the airport, wilder and more natural
The south coast lists 4 resorts: Shanti Maurice, Heritage Awali (all-inclusive), Constance Le Chaland (formerly Anantara Iko, renamed from 5 Feb 2026) and Outrigger Mauritius. The scenery is more natural and less developed; Le Chaland is nearest the airport, so you arrive almost at once.
Access Private transfer: about 15 minutes to Constance Le Chaland, about 45–50 minutes to the others (estimates).
West Coast
Sunsets, diving and generally calmer seas
The west lists 3 resorts: Hilton Mauritius, Sofitel Mauritius L’Impérial and Maradiva Villas. It is relatively drier, has good sunset views, and is a common departure point for dolphin trips and diving.
Access Private transfer, about 65–70 minutes on our estimates.
