Tahiti (main island)
The main island with the international airport — your first night in and last night out
Tahiti itself is the gateway to French Polynesia and home to the capital, Papeete. Its beaches are mostly black volcanic sand and its lagoon is narrower and less clear than the outer islands’, so few people make it their main stay — but international flights often land late at night or early morning, so a night here before moving on is almost standard.
- Access
- Faa’a International Airport (PPT) is on the island’s west coast; both hotels we list are 5–15 minutes away by car, with no boat or flight needed.
- Best for
- Overnight stopover / jet lag · Elders or kids who shouldn’t connect same-day · Papeete market and museums
- Watch out
- · Beaches are mostly black sand — not the white-sand lagoon from the postcards
- · Papeete has real traffic and a city feel, not an island-resort mood
- · Best for 1–2 nights to connect, not as the main stop of the trip
Who it suits
Almost everyone heading to the outer islands passes through Tahiti. If your international arrival time is awkward, you are travelling with elders or children, or you want a buffer against domestic-flight delays, a night here is the least stressful option.
How the two hotels differ
InterContinental Tahiti is about 5 minutes from the airport, with overwater bungalows and a seawater lagoonarium — a way to try an overwater room without leaving the main island; Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort is on Matavai Bay on the north-east side, facing a black-sand beach, and is cheaper.
What to do on the way
Papeete’s central market, the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, and a round-island drive past waterfalls and black-sand beaches fit into a day or two; Teahupo’o at the island’s southern tip is a world-class surf break (the 2024 Olympic surfing venue) that surfers travel for.
Watch out for
Don’t treat Tahiti as a Bora Bora substitute because it has overwater bungalows — the lagoon colour and scenery are very different. For Moorea, take the boat straight from Papeete port; there is no need to go back to the airport.
