Honeymoons & proposals

Picking the right island is only step one. For honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals, knowing how to talk to the resort — what is free, what costs extra, and roughly what it costs — avoids a few traps.

Mention the occasion when booking

Mention a honeymoon, anniversary or proposal when booking or checking in — most resorts add a little for free (petals, cake, a local flower garland — a sasa or salusalu), no need to ask twice.

Free honeymoon perks usually need a marriage certificate

For free extras like a petal-decorated room or cake, many resorts ask for a marriage certificate from within the last 6–12 months. Bring a copy or digital version and email one to the resort ahead of time.

A traditional Fijian ceremony is the local signature

Many resorts, especially the private islands, offer a traditional Fijian wedding ceremony — canoe arrival, flower garlands, a warrior escort, a blessing from a celebrant or village elder. It looks spectacular but carries no legal marriage standing; it's purely ceremonial, bookable on its own or alongside a proposal or honeymoon.

Ask exactly what's in a proposal package

Beach candlelit dinners, private motu setups and "WILL YOU MARRY ME" beach lettering are paid add-ons — a full package (setup + dinner + photography) typically runs $1,200–4,000. Private-island resorts (Turtle Island, Wakaya and similar) run these year-round and tend to be more practised at it than the chain hotels — confirm exactly what's included, the total, and whether tax is on top, before you go.

VAT and service charge may be on top of the quote

Some custom-experience quotes in Fiji already include VAT, some don't — ask directly. A private-island all-inclusive package usually bundles most of the setup and dinner in already, which ends up simpler than pricing each item separately.

Planning a surprise? Don't use a shared inbox

If you're planning a one-sided proposal, keep all correspondence with the resort on your own email. On arrival, find guest relations or your butler privately to confirm timing and location.

Resort photography usually isn't included in the room rate

A resort photographer typically costs extra — around $350–700 for an hour plus editing. At a remote private island, an outside photographer generally can't get to you at all, so you're relying on the resort's own photographer or taking your own.

Outdoor setups depend on weather, especially the wet and cyclone season

Beach dinners and motu picnics are affected by sea conditions and rain. November through April is the wet season and cyclone season (risk peaks January–March) — ask what the backup plan is before booking; most resorts move things to an indoor restaurant or a deck.

Be cautious with "proposal planner" middlemen found on social media

Book custom experiences directly through the resort or a licensed travel agency, using a traceable payment method — avoid personal wire transfers.

Two signals to look for if you want more privacy

A high "privacy" score paired with a genuinely tiny private island — Turtle Island, Wakaya, Kokomo and similar, hosting a dozen-to-thirty-odd guests total — beats a chain resort with hundreds of rooms on privacy by default; an adults-only policy (like Likuliku) is another clear signal.

Roughly what custom experiences cost

Room setup (petals, cake, flower garlands)
Often included in honeymoon perks; standalone roughly US$70–180

Usually free with a marriage certificate; private-island all-inclusive packages usually already include it.

Beach / private motu candlelit dinner (3–4 courses)
US$250–600 for two

Includes a dedicated server and setup; a private-chef custom menu costs more — private-island resorts run these year-round and tend to be practised at it.

Traditional Fijian wedding ceremony
US$400–1,200

Includes a canoe arrival, flower garlands and a village elder's blessing; carries no legal marriage standing.

Couples spa (60–90 min)
US$220–450 for two

Some honeymoon packages include one session; book ahead in high season.

Resort photographer (1 hour + editing)
US$350–700

Priced hourly or as a package; remote private islands are basically inaccessible to outside photographers, so it's the resort's own or nothing.

Private kava ceremony / village visit (honeymoon version)
US$100–300

A more formal version than the standing welcome ceremony; some resorts arrange a dedicated one for honeymooning guests.

Full proposal package (setup + dinner + photography)
US$1,200–4,000

Higher at ultra-luxury private islands and in peak season outside cyclone risk; the grander it is, the earlier you book.

These are common industry ranges, not any one island’s quote. Ultra-luxury islands and peak season run higher, and quotes usually have a service charge and local taxes on top. Most experiences need 2 to 12 weeks’ notice — the grander it is, the earlier you book.
