Island-group guide
Fiji is built around two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, plus hundreds of outer islands grouped geographically into the Mamanucas, Yasawas and more — mostly volcanic islands ringed by reef, not the atoll-lagoon geography of the Maldives. Picking a group is really picking how far from Nadi airport, how you get to the island, and what marine life you can see.
…
Each ring sits on the average coordinates of the sample islands we list. Bigger ring = more islands; colour is the group’s most common transfer. Open a ring and use the link to jump to its section below.
Mamanuca Islands
Fiji's most resort-dense island group, closest to Nadi
The Mamanuca Islands are Fiji's earliest-developed and most resort-dense group - a dozen-plus resorts spread across 20-odd small islands, ranging from family classics to private-island luxury. Being close to Nadi Airport means same-day arrival, which suits tight itineraries or travelling with elders; the trade-off is that some islands sit close enough to see each other, and boat transfers get crowded in peak season.
Access 20 to 90 minutes by speedboat or catamaran from Denarau Marina near Nadi, depending on the island; a few resorts also run their own 15-minute seaplane transfers.

Yasawa Islands
Blue Lagoon film country - further and quieter than Mamanuca
Yasawa is the narrow island chain north of Mamanuca, made famous by the film Blue Lagoon. Development is much lighter here, running from hostel-style beach huts to all-inclusive private islands - a fit for travellers who want a stronger sense of remoteness and have a wide budget range to work with.
Access South Sea Cruises' Yasawa Flyer catamaran runs from Denarau, taking roughly 2.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the island; seaplane transfers (Turtle Airways / Pacific Island Air) take 20-40 minutes direct and cost more but save the day.
Kadavu Islands
Great Barrier Reef-calibre diving on the Astrolabe Reef, one of Fiji's most remote groups
Kadavu is Fiji's fourth-largest island, ringed by the Great Astrolabe Reef, a dive site on par with the Great Barrier Reef. Development is minimal, and diving and eco-tourism are the main draws. Kokomo Private Island Fiji is the only modern luxury option in this area covered here.
Access A domestic flight on a small aircraft (Northern Air / Fiji Link) from Nadi or Suva takes about 30-40 minutes to Kadavu's airstrip, then a resort boat transfer of another 20-60 minutes depending on the island.
Vanua Levu
Fiji's second-largest island, a Savusavu Bay dive base
Vanua Levu is Fiji's second-largest island. The Savusavu area is known for diving the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait, and development here is far lighter than on the main island Viti Levu - visitors skew toward divers and eco-tourists.
Access A domestic flight from Nadi or Suva to Savusavu airport takes about 35-50 minutes; most resorts offer airport transfers.
Coral Coast
Viti Levu's south shore, a classic drive-in resort strip
The Coral Coast is one of Fiji's earliest resort strips. A drive-in gateway skips the transfer hassle entirely, beach and reef quality run mid-to-upper tier, golf/spa/family facilities are well established, and prices are friendlier than the outer islands off Mamanuca.
Access About 45-75 minutes by road along the Queens Road from Nadi Airport; most resorts run a shuttle, so no boat or flight is needed.

Denarau Island
A man-made resort island by Nadi Airport, dense with chain hotels
Denarau is a reclaimed, man-made resort island where international chains - Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, Sofitel, Radisson and more - cluster together with golf courses, a marina and a shopping village. It's the most convenient, lowest-hassle landing spot in Fiji, though it sits further from a true coral reef.
Access About 20-30 minutes by road over the causeway from Nadi International Airport - most flights land with same-day check-in, no extra transfer needed.

Sonaisali Island
A small island resort near Nadi, three minutes across by boat
Sonaisali is a small island close to Nadi that holds a single DoubleTree by Hilton resort, aimed at family holidays at lower prices: a big pool, horse riding and sunset cruises, but the shore is sea wall and mud flat with no swimming beach, and snorkelling means taking a boat from the mainland jetty to the Mamanucas.
Access About 25-30 minutes by road from Nadi International Airport to the Sonaisali landing, then a complimentary resort boat for about three minutes across (24 hours a day).
Lomaiviti Islands
A small, refined private-island group east of Suva
The Lomaiviti Islands lie in the waters east of Viti Levu and are known for a handful of private-island resorts - small, low room counts, built around total privacy and all-inclusive pricing. It's one of Fiji's benchmark boutique-luxury pockets.
Access Most routes connect through Nadi or Suva first, then a seaplane or boat to the island, with timing varying by resort; Wakaya Club & Spa arranges its own small-aircraft transfer.
Taveuni
Fiji's 'Garden Island' and a world-class soft-coral dive site
Taveuni is Fiji's third-largest island, known for dense rainforest and the Somosomo Strait's top-tier soft-coral diving (nicknamed the 'Rainbow Reef'). A handful of small private-island resorts are scattered around it, development is light, and it suits travellers who prioritise diving and privacy and don't mind a longer transfer.
Access A domestic flight from Nadi to Taveuni airstrip takes about 50 minutes, then a resort car/boat transfer of another 15-45 minutes depending on the property.
Beqa Lagoon
Shark-diving territory, a private coastal strip reachable by road from Nadi
Beqa Lagoon is known for cage-free shark diving, and covers both the private coastal estates along Pacific Harbour and the small private islands on Beqa Island itself. Development is light, privacy is strong, and it's a shorter road trip from Nadi than most of Fiji's outer island groups.
Access About 2-2.5 hours by road along the Queens Road from Nadi to the Pacific Harbour area; some resorts also offer a scenic flight of about 30 minutes direct to their own airstrip. Resorts on Beqa Island itself need a further short boat transfer.
