Water sports & diving costs

The most easily underestimated cost beyond the room. Below, grouped by free / snorkel / dive / cruise / upgrade, are typical price levels — the exact price is whatever the resort’s water sports / dive centre posts on arrival.

Mostly free / in the room rate

House-reef snorkelling

Mostly free; a deposit may apply for borrowed gear

Islands with a house reef rated "excellent / good" let you get in the water daily at no extra cost — the cheapest way to snorkel. Bringing your own mask, snorkel and fins is better value than renting on the island, and fits your face better.

Non-motorised water sports

Mostly free, or a small deposit

Kayaks, SUP, windsurfing, pedal boats and the like — most resort water sports centres lend these free, signed out by the hour or per use; the range is limited when it is windy.

Gym / group classes / main pool

Free

Group classes like yoga and Pilates are mostly free (private sessions extra); the gym and main pool have no charge.

Snorkelling

Snorkel excursion / sandbank picnic

About $50–120 per person

A boat to a snorkel site beyond the house reef, or an uninhabited sandbank — usually 3–4 hours, generally with a light meal or drinks. On islands with an average house reef, this is the main snorkelling cost.

Manta / whale-shark excursion

About $90–200 per person

Whether you see them depends heavily on season and atoll: Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll) manta season is ~May–Nov; South Ari Atoll has a higher year-round chance of whale sharks. If your travel month is undecided, check the seasons guide before scheduling this.

Diving

Single boat dive (certified)

About $80–200 per dive; equipment rental often extra

Price depends on how far the dive site is and whether gear is included. Bring your certification card and log book; many dive centres require a check dive on the first outing.

Multi-dive package

5 dives ~$350–800, 10 dives ~$650–1,500

A package is ~15–25% cheaper than single dives. Worth buying if you plan 3+ dives; if unsure how many you will do, ask whether unused dives are refundable.

PADI Discover Scuba / certification

Discover Scuba ~$100–180; Open Water course ~$450–900

Most dive centres take walk-in sign-ups; booking a day ahead is advised. Doing the theory + pool sessions at home and only the open-water dives here (a referral) saves a day or two and some cost.

Night dive / Nitrox

Night dive ~$90–150; Nitrox ~$10–30 extra per dive

Night dives for nurse sharks, lobsters and bioluminescent plankton; Nitrox extends bottom time — some centres offer it free or nominally to certified divers, confirm at booking.

Cruises · excursions · watching

Sunset cruise / dolphin watching

About $60–100 per person

An evening trip of 1.5–2 hours; with luck you see spinner dolphins — the experience is diminished on cloudy days.

Sunset / big-game fishing

About $50–90 per person; private charter negotiated

Mostly traditional handline fishing; the restaurant will usually cook what you catch. Deep-sea trolling for big fish is priced as a private charter and costs a lot more.

Surfing

Free at surf islands; a surf guide / boat to the break ~$30–80

Breaks are concentrated in North Malé and the central atolls (e.g. Pasta Point, Lohis), best March–October. Non-surf islands usually have no waves.

Paid upgrades / private

Motorised water sports

About $30–90 per session

Banana boat, jet ski, parasailing, donut rides — charged per use or by time; family islands have a fuller range.

High-end water toys

About $100–300 per session

SeaBob underwater scooters, jetpacks, flyboards — only at some ultra-luxury islands, and you must book an instructor ahead.

Private charter / private-sandbank dinner

Hundreds to thousands of dollars, priced by boat and duration

A common paid extra for proposals and anniversaries; book via the resort concierge by email and confirm what is included.

A meal-inclusive rate (BB / HB / FB / all-inclusive) covers dining, not water activities. Even on all-inclusive, diving and boat trips usually still cost extra or have a cap — confirm with the resort before booking.

A rough sum: how much to budget for this

A couple, 5 nights, wanting a "one day out at sea / diving every other day" rhythm, both certified divers

Snorkel excursion / sandbank ×2 (two people)
~$200–480
5-dive package ×2 people
~$700–1,600
Dive gear rental, 5 days (two people)
~$150–400
Sunset cruise ×1 (two people)
~$120–200
Service charge + GST
add ~25% to the subtotal

Roughly $1,400–3,300 for two

Islands with a good house reef cut most of the excursion cost; a couple who only snorkel, same rhythm, usually spend $400–900.

Practical tips

Leave enough time between the last dive and flying

You cannot fly right after diving: allow at least 12 hours after a single dive, 18–24 hours after multiple or multi-day diving. Schedule the return flight / seaplane for a day after your last dive day — do not squeeze certification or back-to-back diving into the end of the trip.

Carry your certification and log book

The card (physical or a PADI / SSI e-card) and your log book are how a dive centre verifies your qualification. If you have not dived for six months to a year, most centres require a refresher first, charged on site.

Gear: bring or rent

Bring your own mask, snorkel and fins — better fit, more hygienic, and saves rental. For dive gear it depends on the trip: 1–2 dives, rent; 5+ dives or more trips ahead, bringing your own regulator + dive computer is better value. Wetsuits are generally available on the island; bring a 3mm in winter or if you feel the cold.

There is tax on top of the activity price

Water sports centre / dive centre prices usually add ~10% service charge and 17% GST, sometimes a fuel surcharge. Ask directly "is tax included?", and when estimating the total, add ~25% to the quoted price to be safe.

Book popular activities ahead, weather permitting

Certification, private charters, and manta / whale-shark excursions in peak season need booking 1–2 days ahead. Strong wind and swell cause cancellations or reschedules — do not put a "must-do" on the last day; leave a day of slack.

What kids can join

From age 8, a pool Discover Scuba (Bubblemaker); from age 10, the Junior Open Water course. Most boat trips and snorkel excursions have an age or height limit for small children — ask the water sports centre before signing up.

Islands with a good house reef save a lot on excursions. At Browse resorts you can filter by "good house reef"; for mantas and whale sharks, first check the seasons guide before setting your travel month.
