Atoll guide

The Maldives is made of 20-plus atolls, each a ring of coral reef around a lagoon dotted with one-island resorts. Picking an atoll is really picking how far from the airport, how you get to the island, and what marine life you can see.

…

SpeedboatSeaplaneDomestic flight

Each ring sits on the average coordinates of the sample islands we list. Bigger ring = more islands; colour is the atoll’s most common transfer. Open a ring and use the link to jump to its section below.

Central · right by Malé

North Malé Atoll

Closest to the airport — a classic first choice, 20–55 min by speedboat

Where most people start on a first Maldives trip, on a tight schedule, with elders, or wanting to skip transfer hassle. Resorts here opened early and are plentiful, from budget to luxury, and a direct speedboat means a flexible itinerary. The trade-off is high island density — a few islands see the lights of neighbours, and the top-tier "cut off from the world" feeling is weaker than the northern atolls.

Access All speedboat, 20–55 min. On the island the day you land, no waiting for a seaplane slot.

South Malé Atoll

Speedboat-reachable, quieter than the north atoll, generally good house reefs

Like North Malé it runs on speedboats, but the mood is more relaxed overall. Several islands here are known for a complete house reef you can snorkel straight off the beach. The price range is wide: long-established budget islands at a few hundred dollars a night, and a private-island villa peak at Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi.

Access All speedboat, 25–45 min. Also on the island the day you land.

Baa Atoll

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay

Baa is the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Roughly May–Nov (peak Aug–Oct), plankton gathers on the current in Hanifaru Bay, drawing large groups of mantas and the occasional whale shark — one of the few reliable aggregation points in the world. Resorts are mostly mid-to-high end, with nature handled in a restrained, considered way.

Access ~30–40 min by seaplane; or a ~30 min domestic flight from Malé to Dharavandhoo, then speedboat.

Noonu Atoll

Seaplane only — an ultra-private high-end circle

Noonu is one of the atolls where ultra-high-end resorts cluster; deep lagoons, overwater villas and large residences are the theme. Islands are few and spread out, privacy is strong, and it suits a trip where "not being disturbed" comes first. Because it is seaplane-only, schedules and weather constrain your arrival time more.

Access Mostly seaplane, ~40–45 min; a few islands (Kuredhivaru, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and others) also allow a domestic flight from Malé to Maafaru airport plus a speedboat.

Ari Atoll

South Ari Marine Protected Area — a chance of whale sharks year-round

Ari Atoll, especially the South Ari MPA, is famous for whale sharks all year, and has plenty of manta cleaning stations too — a top pick for divers and anyone hoping to meet the big animals. Resorts run from budget snorkelling islands to established luxury twin islands like Conrad, and North vs South Ari differ a little in transfer and style.

Access North Ari ~25–30 min by seaplane; South Ari via a domestic flight to Maamigili airport, then a 15–20 min speedboat.

Dhaalu Atoll

Its own domestic airport, from an all-inclusive activity island to peak-luxury seclusion

Dhaalu is south of South Malé and southeast of Ari, developed through the 2010s, with wide gaps between islands and a low visitor density. Because it has its own domestic airport, you can still reach the island via a domestic flight + speedboat in bad weather. The islands covered here span a wide range: at one end the St. Regis Vommuli with all-private-pool villas and St. Regis butlers - peak-luxury seclusion; at the other Kandima, a very long, activity-packed all-inclusive island; in between are Niyama's two-island design, Sun Siyam Vilu Reef's value family all-inclusive, Baglioni's Italian all-inclusive, Angsana Velavaru's signature In-Ocean "free-standing water villas in the middle of the lagoon", and Sun Siyam Iru Veli's all-pool villas plus a resident dolphin channel.

Access ~40 min by seaplane; or a domestic flight to Dhaalu (Kudahuvadhoo) airport of about 30 min, then a 15–20 min speedboat.

Shaviyani Atoll

One of the far north atolls - few islands, quiet, whole-island resorts

Shaviyani is near the far north of the Maldives, with very few resorts, late development and a low visitor density. The two islands covered here contrast sharply: the JW Marriott is a whole-island resort with just 60 private-pool villas, known for its dining, its family policy (under-12s eat lunch and dinner free island-wide) and its staff service; Sirru Fen Fushi (formerly Fairmont) is wrapped in one of the largest resort lagoons in the Maldives at 600 hectares, built around a 200 m pool and the Coralarium underwater art gallery.

Access Seaplane only, about 55 minutes (operating 07:00-16:00), with possible multi-stop pickups en route. There are Funadhoo / Maafaru domestic airports nearby, and some itineraries can use a domestic flight.

Rasdhoo Atoll

Small atoll with a hammerhead dawn dive and a good house reef

Rasdhoo is a small atoll north of Ari, known for its early-morning hammerhead dive site and a house reef in good shape. It suits people who put diving first but do not want to pay too much. The two resorts covered here are complementary: Kuramathi is a very long natural island plus a sandbank, with a wide range of room types and friendly prices; Veligandu is a long thin island plus a signature sandbank, renovated in 2022, an adult-leaning classic honeymoon island.

Access ~90 min by speedboat, or ~20 min by seaplane.

Raa Atoll

An emerging northern atoll, the densest all-inclusive cluster, from wellness luxury to budget AI

Raa Atoll is north of Baa, developed later, with wide gaps between islands and a quiet feel, and all-inclusive islands are especially concentrated here. The range is wide: JOALI weaves contemporary art through the whole island and JOALI BEING is the Maldives’ first wellness island (16+); InterContinental Maamunagau (Club InterContinental island-wide) and Alila Kothaifaru (Alila by Hyatt, 80 all-pool villas) are the international-brand modern-luxury end; Heritance Aarah, Cora Cora, RAAYA, Emerald and Emerald Faarufushi are premium all-inclusives repeatedly praised for value; and Dhigali, Reethi Faru and Adaaran Select Meedhupparu are more affordable all-inclusive family islands. House reefs are generally good, with beach-entry snorkelling at several islands.

Access ~40 min by seaplane; or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo / Ifuru / Raa Atoll airport plus a speedboat — the domestic route is the cheaper option.

Laamu Atoll

One of the southernmost — world-class surf and almost no tourists, from ultra-lux to a dive lodge

Laamu is in the far south of the Maldives, with only a handful of resorts across the whole atoll, extremely low guest density and a world-class right-hand break. The two are polar opposites: Six Senses Laamu is an ultra-lux private island that takes sustainability to the limit; Reveries Diving Village is a very cheap dive lodge on the inhabited island of Gan. It suits surfers, divers, and anyone who wants to truly disconnect and does not mind spending longer to reach the island.

Access A ~35–50 min domestic flight from Malé to Kadhdhoo, then a speedboat or (on Gan) a ~10 min drive. Longer total transfer than the central atolls.

Lhaviyani Atoll

An established dive atoll, from a classic big island to an ultra-lux private island

Lhaviyani is known for diving — the Kuredu Express channel and the Shipyard wreck are nearby. The range here is wide: Kuredu is a typical big-island resort (many rooms, many activities, moderate prices), Le Méridien is a bright mid-luxury property that opened in 2021, and Kudadoo is an ultra-lux private island of just 15 water villas on a truly all-inclusive plan.

Addu Atoll

The southernmost, equator-straddling atoll — its own international airport, value and diving

Addu (Seenu) is at the far south of the Maldives, straddling the equator, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with freshwater lakes, mangroves and WWII relics, and with its own international airport it is often chosen for value, getting away from crowds and diving. Both islands covered here sit at the low end of the price range: Canareef is a beach-bungalow resort on a 4.5 km beach; Equator Village is a garden-bungalow resort converted from the RAF's old 'British Club' base, at the lowest price band in the Maldives.

Access A ~1.5 hr domestic flight from Malé to Gan (crossing the equator), then a 10–15 min speedboat. Gan also has an international airport, so you can fly in directly from Colombo and skip the Malé transfer.

Gaafu Alifu Atoll

A huge southern atoll — top-end all-inclusive and a rare natural freshwater lake

Gaafu Alifu (North Huvadhu) is one of the largest and deepest natural atolls in the Maldives, down south, developed late, with low guest density and plenty of dive sites. The four islands covered here span a wide range: Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is an 18-hectare island wrapped around a natural freshwater lake (almost unique in the Maldives), all private-pool villas plus a Deluxe all-inclusive plus lots of big events - a lively island; The Residence at Falhumaafushi is linked by a 6 km over-lagoon bridge to sister island Dhigurah, so facilities across both islands are shared, with contemporary design and farm-to-table dining; Park Hyatt Hadahaa is an understated eco Park Hyatt whose signature is a 360-degree reef circling the island, a Travel + Leisure Top 5 Best House Reef in Asia Pacific for 2026; Mercure Kooddoo shares its island with Kooddoo domestic airport - a 3-minute buggy to your villa on arrival with no boat - an adults-only (18+) Ultra all-inclusive value island.

Access A ~55 min domestic flight from Malé to Gaafu Alifu (Kaadedhdhoo) airport, then a speedboat. Down south, so the total is longer than the central atolls.

Haa Alifu Atoll

The Maldives' northernmost administrative atoll - remote and uncrowded

Haa Alif (North Thiladhunmathi) is the northernmost administrative atoll in the Maldives - far from Malé, with very few resorts and low guest density. Two islands are covered here: JA Manafaru (84 villas all with private pools, once a Waldorf Astoria, kids stay free) and Hideaway Beach (about 106 villas, a clear house reef and a full facility list). The pitch is far-north seclusion, at the cost of about 2 hours of transfers.

Haa Dhaalu (South Thiladhunmathi) is in the far north and had no resort at all before 2024. The only island covered here is Soneva Secret: 14 villas (including the first floating villa in the Maldives), each with a three-person host team, a new Soneva ultra-luxury concept built around total privacy (no other island on the horizon).

The only island covered here is Cinnamon Velifushi: a 90-villa island that opened in 2019, Italian-styled, a single-main-restaurant all-inclusive, with a house reef right under the water villas (sharks, rays, the occasional manta) and friendly pricing.

The one island covered here is that resort - Filitheyo Island Resort, which opened in 2000: a jungly, thatched-roof, understated island whose house reef is repeatedly rated one of the best snorkelling / diving house reefs in the Maldives (a coral wall, two wrecks, reef sharks, rays and turtles).
