Honeymoons & proposals
Picking the right island is only step one. For honeymoons, anniversaries and proposals, knowing how to talk to the resort — what is free, what costs extra, and roughly what it costs — avoids a few traps.
Mention the occasion at booking
For a honeymoon, anniversary or proposal, tell the resort at booking or check-in (if a travel agent booked, have them note it on the order). Most resorts add a little for free — petals, a cake, a fruit platter, a bottle of sparkling wine — this is routine, you do not need to ask specially.
Free honeymoon perks usually need a marriage certificate
For the free flower bed, cake and sparkling wine, most resorts want a marriage certificate dated within the last 6 to 12 months. Bring a copy or a scan, and email one to the resort before you go. Past that window you get the standard anniversary treatment instead, which is a lighter setup.
Clarify proposal packages in advance
A "proposal package" — a beach candlelit dinner, a private chef, sand decoration, a "will you marry me" sign — is usually a paid extra; a full package (setup + dinner + photography + sparkling wine) runs US$1,500 to US$5,000. Email the resort before you go to confirm exactly what is included, the total, and whether tax is on top, rather than finding a mismatch on arrival.
Service charge and tax are on top of the quote
Quotes for custom experiences in the Maldives are almost always pre-tax. On the bill you also pay a 10% service charge and 16 to 17% GST — so a US$400 private dinner lands around US$500. When you ask for a price, ask straight out whether it includes tax and service.
For a surprise, do not plan from a shared inbox
If one of you is planning the proposal, keep all resort emails on your own address and do not cc your partner. On arrival, find guest relations or your butler alone and run through the time, place and signal — the setup and the photographer usually need a few hours of lead time.
Photography is usually not in the room rate
The resort’s own photographer is normally a separate charge — about US$300 to US$700 for an hour plus editing. On a limited budget, have the resort set the scene and photograph each other with a phone / camera; underwater sessions are mostly a separate booking from US$400 and depend on weather and sea conditions.
Sunset setups and sandbank picnics depend on the weather
Beach dinners, sandbank picnics and sunset champagne are all at the mercy of the sea and the rain. In the wet season (May to October), ask what the rain plan is before you book — most resorts move you to an indoor restaurant or a villa deck, but the setup is less special, so it helps to know in advance.
Drones and fireworks: check first whether they are allowed
The Maldives regulates drones fairly tightly, and many resorts only let a licensed operator fly in a set area; fireworks have been stopped at most islands or need advance approval. If you want an aerial proposal video, check whether the resort has its own licensed photographer — do not count on flying your own drone on the spot.
Be careful with "proposal planner" agents found on social media
Social platforms are full of individuals who resell rooms and proposal planning. There have been cases in recent years of people paying and then the trip falling through, with refunds hard to recover. Book custom services through the resort directly or a licensed travel agent, use a traceable payment method, and do not rely on a personal transfer.
For more privacy, look at these two signals
Islands scoring high on "quiet & private" in the data, with villas mostly overwater + private pool, usually have low guest density and a low chance of being disturbed. Tick the "quiet & private" tag when filtering, or check the resort data for a "good for honeymoon / proposal" marker.

Mostly free with a marriage certificate; a petal bath or a custom banner is extra.
The breakfast-in-the-pool shot; some honeymoon packages include one.
Dedicated waiter and setup included; a private-chef bespoke menu is US$400–900+.
Depends on boat time and whether champagne and snorkelling are included; sandbanks follow the tide.
Some honeymoon packages include one session; book the slot early in peak season.
Hourly or by package; extra hours about US$150. An outside photographer pays a landing fee at most islands.
Weather-dependent and rescheduled in poor visibility; best if you dive or freedive.
Setup, celebrant, certificate and cake; some include photography. Not a legal marriage — ceremony only.
Higher at ultra-luxury islands and in peak season; the grander it is, the earlier you book.
These are common industry ranges, not any one island’s quote. Ultra-luxury islands and peak season run higher, and quotes usually have a service charge and local taxes on top. Most experiences need 2 to 12 weeks’ notice — the grander it is, the earlier you book.
Islands in our set for honeymoons & proposals
A few from the resorts we cover that score high on privacy and are marked suitable for the occasion.
The Nautilus Maldives
The highest privacy score in our set, no fixed schedule, a butler arranging everything at your pace — good for a proposal trip where you want to be left completely alone.
Gili Lankanfushi
All overwater, neighbours barely visible, a classic honeymoon choice; the signature "Private Reserve" is a standalone residence set apart from the main island.
Soneva Jani
Slide villas and private sandbank dinners; outdoor dining and starlit cinema are the signatures, and the setups feel like an occasion.
Baros Maldives
The only luxury small island in our set also tagged for proposals; the signature Piano Deck is an over-water platform for two, and the house reef is good.
Milaidhoo Maldives
All-inclusive and private, with bespoke dinners and butler service largely off the itemised bill — good for a honeymoon where you would rather not keep doing the maths.
