Getting to the island
After your international flight lands in Malé, one more leg gets you to the resort. Which one depends on the island’s location, but it directly affects whether you arrive the same day, how comfortable it is for elders, and whether you need a night in Malé.
Speedboat
The resort’s speedboat takes you straight from the airport to the island, with luggage handled for you. Used for islands around Malé (North / South Malé Atoll).
- Time
- 15–90 min, mostly 20–45 min
- Cost
- Roughly $100–300 per person round trip, less at budget islands (booked by the resort, usually a separate line on the bill)
- Runs
- All day, including at night. Handles flight delays and red-eye arrivals.
- · Bumpy when there is swell in the wet season; a middle window seat is steadier
- · A few big islands (e.g. Meeru) are a 50+ min speedboat — not all "very close"
Seaplane
Wait at the seaplane terminal at Malé airport, take a small propeller floatplane that lands right on the resort lagoon, then a short boat transfer. Used for mid-to-far atolls (Baa, Noonu, Raa, northern Ari, etc.).
- Time
- 20–50 min flight, plus 1–4 hours to allow for terminal waiting
- Cost
- Roughly $350–600 per person round trip (booked by the resort, usually a separate line on the bill)
- Runs
- Daytime only (roughly sunrise to sunset). A late international arrival cannot fly the same day — overnight in Malé or fly first thing the next morning.
- · No jet bridge; take-off and landing pitch and turbulence makes it bumpy — not great for elders prone to motion sickness
- · Baggage limit is usually 20–25 kg + carry-on, excess costs extra
- · Waiting time is uncertain — seaplanes are scheduled by weather and load, not by the time you book
- · An evening / night arrival almost always means a night in Malé
- · Heavy rain or strong wind grounds flights widely — in bad cases you can be stuck in Malé for a day or two. For wet-season trips, leave buffer in the itinerary and buy travel insurance that covers delays / being stranded
Domestic flight + speedboat
A domestic flight from Malé to the nearest regional airport (e.g. Dharavandhoo in Baa, Kadhdhoo in Laamu, Maamigili in South Ari), then a resort speedboat. Used for mid-to-far atolls that have a regional airport.
- Time
- 25–40 min flight + 10–40 min speedboat
- Cost
- Roughly $250–450 per person round trip (booked by the resort, usually a separate line on the bill)
- Runs
- Domestic flights have morning and evening slots — more flexible than a seaplane; a late arrival sometimes connects the same day, sometimes the next.
- · One more baggage check-in — the whole process is longer than a pure speedboat
- · Connection time depends on flight and speedboat schedules; you may wait at the regional airport
- · There is still a speedboat leg — also bumpy in the wet season
One-line advice
- · With elders / infants, short trip, red-eye arrival → prefer a speedboat island (North / South Malé Atoll).
- · Going to Baa, Noonu and other northern luxury atolls, arriving in daylight → seaplane, and enjoy the view.
- · Going to Laamu and other far-southern atolls → domestic flight transfer; leave enough connection time.
- · Evening / night arrival but want a seaplane island → likely a night in Malé; check when booking.
