Guest reputation
Tripadvisor ranking: 1 of 1 on Velaa Island; sub-scores Rooms / Cleanliness / Service 5.0, Value 4.6
Common praise
- An owner's passion project - much of the staff has been there since opening, service is excellent, and there are many repeat guests (some coming every year for 4-5 years); high season sells out before open sale
- Land-based sport is the differentiator: a short-game golf academy, tennis / padel coached by former pros, 'the best resort gym I have stayed at'
- A dedicated chef for each cuisine, with Athiri the best-reviewed main restaurant; the snow room and spa are well received
- Framed as a 'seven-star private island', a 'peak-luxury' and 'old-money' pick - a top-of-the-pyramid choice for honeymoons / privacy; favoured by Chinese celebrities
- The 4-bedroom residence, island buyouts and privacy are frequent selling points; in-depth positive reviews ('my number 1') exist but are not numerous
Common complaints
- Everything is 'absurdly expensive' and the chit process is cumbersome; the Tavaru teppanyaki is pricey with an unremarkable dining setting
- One 'mixed feelings' review: no proactive poolside service, service overall below expectations (that guest had just transferred from another resort in the same atoll to compare)
- Bigger swell on one side of the water villas in the wet season - dry season is recommended
- Most posts are 'island tier list / peak-luxury comparison' round-ups rather than dedicated trip reports
- Repeatedly asked 'is it really worth it' / 'how do you book it'; agency posts mention a September maintenance closure and a full villa redesign in progress
Tripadvisor 4.9/5 (337 reviews, full marks for Rooms / Cleanliness / Service) and Google 4.8/5 (238) - on Xiaohongshu it is a 'seven-star private island / old-money / celebrity' luxury symbol, though dedicated trip reports are few. All three agree: an owner's project, opening-era staff and service, very high privacy, land-based sport (golf academy / gym / racquet sports) and Aragu / the wine cellar are the draws; the weaknesses are 'absurdly expensive' extras and a cumbersome chit process, with occasional inconsistent service, bigger swell on the water-villa side in the wet season; the villas are being renovated in phases through 2026, with a maintenance closure in September.
