Coral Coast

Viti Levu's south shore, a classic drive-in resort strip

The Coral Coast is one of Fiji's earliest resort strips. A drive-in gateway skips the transfer hassle entirely, beach and reef quality run mid-to-upper tier, golf/spa/family facilities are well established, and prices are friendlier than the outer islands off Mamanuca.

Access
About 45-75 minutes by road along the Queens Road from Nadi Airport; most resorts run a shuttle, so no boat or flight is needed.
Best for
Drive-in - no boat or flight needed · Golf · Family travel · Moderate budgets
Watch out
  • · The house reef tends to be shallow, so low tide isn't great for swimming and top-tier snorkelling usually means a boat trip
  • · Resorts line the main road, so privacy is less than a true offshore island resort
  • · Roads and attractions get crowded in peak season (July-August)

Who it suits

The Coral Coast suits travellers who want to drive in without a boat or a flight: it's 45-75 minutes from Nadi Airport along the Queens Road, the least hassle for anyone travelling with older relatives, with children, or on just a few days.

Price tiers

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa at Natadola Bay follows the established chain golf-and-family formula; Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay (opened 2017) has a man-made lagoon and 22 overwater bures for guests 18 and over, the closest thing to a true island feel on Fiji's main island, priced at the higher end of the chains. Three larger, more family-oriented resorts sit alongside: Shangri-La Yanuca Island (443 rooms, a free kids club, an adults-only Reef Wing), OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort (253 rooms, an award-winning kids club and a water park) and Warwick Fiji (about 247 rooms, an adults-only Suva Wing) - rated 3.9, 4.5 and 4.2 on Tripadvisor, with dated facilities and value the main weak points.

Snorkelling & diving

The house reef is shallow and low tide is poor for swimming; at Momi Bay you snorkel in the man-made lagoon, where there are fish but clarity depends on the weather and the artificial beach. For serious snorkelling, go out by boat or stay on an outer island.

What to watch for

These resorts are generally a long way from Port Denarau (Warwick, mid-Coral Coast, is about 1.5 hours from the airport), so budget the drive and fare before planning island day trips (Momi Bay guests cite about FJ$180 one way by taxi to the marina); Momi Bay's overwater bures don't accept guests under 18.
