Vanua Levu
Fiji's second-largest island, a Savusavu Bay dive base
Vanua Levu is Fiji's second-largest island. The Savusavu area is known for diving the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait, and development here is far lighter than on the main island Viti Levu - visitors skew toward divers and eco-tourists.
- Access
- A domestic flight from Nadi or Suva to Savusavu airport takes about 35-50 minutes; most resorts offer airport transfers.
- Best for
- Diving / soft corals · Eco travel · Getting away from the crowds
- Watch out
- · Few resort choices, and infrastructure is less developed than around Nadi
- · Rainforest climate means higher humidity in some areas, more pronounced in the wet season
- · Limited shopping/dining outside the resorts - most activities centre on the property itself
Who it suits
Vanua Levu suits divers and anyone who values quiet enough to accept a longer journey: a 35-50 minute domestic flight from Nadi to Savusavu, then a resort transfer. Only two small, estate-style resorts are covered here, so it is not for guests who want pool parties or a choice of many restaurants.
Price tiers & differences
Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort (luxury) has 25 standalone bures, a resident marine biologist, a dive centre and a kids club - one of the few family-friendly options here. Namale Resort & Spa (ultra-luxury) has just 22 villas on 525 acres, takes guests aged 18 and over only, and is all-inclusive (drinks, some guided activities and airport transfers).
Snorkelling & diving
At both resorts the house reef is only fair; the real draw is the Namena Marine Reserve, about 10-20 minutes by boat, whose reef walls and soft corals are why divers come. Namale also runs a boat to reefs around Savusavu Bay. If you want lots of coral straight off the beach, look at the Mamanucas or Yasawas instead.
What to watch for
Light development means little to shop for or eat at outside the resorts, so activities centre on the property; some areas are humid with a rainforest climate, more pronounced in the wet season. Namale does not accept under-18s, so families should choose Cousteau.
