Yasawa Islands
Blue Lagoon film country - further and quieter than Mamanuca
Yasawa is the narrow island chain north of Mamanuca, made famous by the film Blue Lagoon. Development is much lighter here, running from hostel-style beach huts to all-inclusive private islands - a fit for travellers who want a stronger sense of remoteness and have a wide budget range to work with.
- Access
- South Sea Cruises' Yasawa Flyer catamaran runs from Denarau, taking roughly 2.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the island; seaplane transfers (Turtle Airways / Pacific Island Air) take 20-40 minutes direct and cost more but save the day.
- Best for
- Honeymoons / proposals · Wanting a stronger sense of remoteness · Wide budget range (economy to ultra-luxury)
- Watch out
- · Transfers take a while - if you get seasick or are travelling with elders, choose the seaplane over the boat
- · Some islands have basic facilities - don't expect Maldives-style large-resort standards
- · Wet-season (Nov-Apr) flights and boats occasionally cancel for weather - build slack into the itinerary
Who it suits
Yasawa suits travellers who aren't in a rush and want a genuine sense of getting away from it all. The boat transfer eats most of a day and the seaplane, while fast, isn't cheap per person round-trip - either way this isn't a destination you can casually change your mind about. That same friction is exactly why the sense of isolation and untouched feel here is noticeably stronger than in Mamanuca.
Price tiers
At the top is Turtle Island - converted into an all-inclusive private island by an American businessman in 1972, a long-running honeymoon spot for Hollywood stars and royalty, with just 14 bures and most activities and dining included. The boutique, adults-leaning Yasawa Island Resort & Spa runs a small-and-refined model aimed at couples and honeymooners without kids. Further north there are also more modest, family-run stays, so the budget range here is wide.
Snorkelling & diving
The northern Yasawa reefs are better protected, and several resorts' house reefs turn up reef sharks and turtles; the clear lagoon around the Blue Lagoon area is a signature snorkel spot. The water is more pristine overall than Mamanuca, but there's also less infrastructure (dive centres, tank refills) - confirm serious dive plans with the resort ahead of time.
What to watch for
There's almost no spontaneity here - boat schedules are limited and seaplanes depend on weather, so lock in transfer times well in advance. Some family-run stays have limited power/wifi, so dial back expectations of chain-resort-level service before you go.
