Mamanuca Islands
Fiji's most resort-dense island group, closest to Nadi
The Mamanuca Islands are Fiji's earliest-developed and most resort-dense group - a dozen-plus resorts spread across 20-odd small islands, ranging from family classics to private-island luxury. Being close to Nadi Airport means same-day arrival, which suits tight itineraries or travelling with elders; the trade-off is that some islands sit close enough to see each other, and boat transfers get crowded in peak season.
- Access
- 20 to 90 minutes by speedboat or catamaran from Denarau Marina near Nadi, depending on the island; a few resorts also run their own 15-minute seaplane transfers.
- Best for
- First trip to Fiji · Tight itineraries / quick transfers · Family travel · Honeymoons (pick the right island)
- Watch out
- · Some islands sit close enough together that privacy is less than Yasawa or the outer groups
- · Peak-season Yasawa Flyer / South Sea Cruises boats fill up - book ahead
- · House reef quality varies a lot by island - top-tier snorkelling means picking carefully or heading out by boat
Who it suits
Mamanuca is Fiji's low-risk starting point: a same-day speedboat beats the full-day slog to Yasawa or the outer groups. It suits anyone prone to seasickness, travelling with elders, working a 5-7 day trip, or landing in Fiji for the first time and wanting a sure thing. Resort density is high, spanning a couple-hundred-dollar family island all the way to a couple-thousand-dollar private one.
Price tiers
Entry to mid-range includes classics like Castaway Island Fiji (65 thatched-roof bures, a long-running family favourite); high-end to ultra-luxury includes Six Senses Fiji, which opened in 2023, and the adults-only Likuliku Lagoon Resort - the only resort in Fiji with genuine overwater bures, a rarity in a country where villas are almost all land-based. Also here is Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, a Marriott-family resort priced at the affordable end of the Mamanucas, with an adults-only wing and good house-reef snorkelling, though its rooms are dated and the boat ride is long.
Snorkelling & diving
The outer reefs around Mamanuca are decent, and some resorts' house reefs put you among coral and fish straight off the beach, though the group overall doesn't match northern Yasawa or Kadavu's Astrolabe Reef - serious divers tend to head further out. Surfers can boat out from here to the Cloudbreak break near Tavarua.
What to watch for
This is the most visited part of Fiji by resort density, so anyone chasing total seclusion should look at Yasawa or Kadavu instead. Boats and popular islands get crowded in peak season (July-August, Christmas/New Year) - lock in ferry tickets and room types ahead of time.
