Taveuni
Fiji's 'Garden Island' and a world-class soft-coral dive site
Taveuni is Fiji's third-largest island, known for dense rainforest and the Somosomo Strait's top-tier soft-coral diving (nicknamed the 'Rainbow Reef'). A handful of small private-island resorts are scattered around it, development is light, and it suits travellers who prioritise diving and privacy and don't mind a longer transfer.

Who it suits
Taveuni suits travellers who put diving, or total seclusion, above all else. Getting here from Nadi means a domestic flight and then a boat, more of a haul than Mamanuca, but it buys you some of Fiji's best soft-coral diving and a private-island experience with almost no interruption.
Price tiers
Matangi Private Island Resort is a fourth-generation, family-run, adults-only boutique island known for its distinctive treehouse-style bures. Paradise Taveuni sits on a lava-rock shoreline at the southern tip of Taveuni itself, priced more accessibly and built around a PADI dive centre and shore diving - a better fit if diving is the priority over budget.
Snorkelling & diving
The Somosomo Strait (nicknamed the 'Rainbow Reef') is widely regarded as one of the world's top dive sites for its current-fed density and colour of soft coral, drawing serious divers specifically for it; snorkellers also get a solid experience on the reefs around the islands themselves.
What to watch for
There's almost no spontaneity here - domestic flights are infrequent and weather-dependent, so build slack into the itinerary. With so few resorts, keep your booking window flexible.
