Denarau Island

A man-made resort island by Nadi Airport, dense with chain hotels

Denarau is a reclaimed, man-made resort island where international chains - Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, Sofitel, Radisson and more - cluster together with golf courses, a marina and a shopping village. It's the most convenient, lowest-hassle landing spot in Fiji, though it sits further from a true coral reef.

Access
About 20-30 minutes by road over the causeway from Nadi International Airport - most flights land with same-day check-in, no extra transfer needed.
Best for
Transit / short stopovers · Travelling with parents / elders · Shopping / golf · Redeeming chain loyalty points
Watch out
  • · Being man-made, beach and reef quality is middling - snorkelling generally means a boat trip out
  • · Visitor density is high, so privacy and a sense of "getting away" are the weakest in the Fiji sample
  • · It reads more like a resort district with Fijian flavour than an authentic island getaway

Who it suits

Denarau suits travellers who put 'land and check in' first: about 20-30 minutes by road from the airport, the least hassle for older relatives, children, transit nights, or anyone redeeming chain points.

Price tiers

The chains are clustered here: Sofitel (upscale, French-styled, with an optional adults-only beach club), Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa (lots of pools but dated rooms, and the lowest-rated of the Denarau group on Tripadvisor), Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort (renovated 2022, family-friendly) and Sheraton Denarau Villas (82 apartment-style two- and three-bedroom suites, good for multigenerational trips). The neighbouring Westin is closed for renovation and expected to reopen in November 2026.

Snorkelling & diving

Denarau is man-made, with a muddy-sand seabed, limited reef and beaches that aren't Fiji's typical white sand; to snorkel you take a boat from Port Denarau to the Mamanucas or Yasawas, and same-day return trips are easy - which is the real value of staying here.

What to watch for

Recent renovation noise at the Sheraton properties (especially on the Villas side), so ask to be away from the construction wing when booking; the Sheraton, the Villas and the Westin share a lobby and restaurant, which can feel crowded in peak season; taxis around the complex are pricey, so use the Bula Bus to get around the resort strip.
