Baa Atoll
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay
Baa is the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Roughly May–Nov (peak Aug–Oct), plankton gathers on the current in Hanifaru Bay, drawing large groups of mantas and the occasional whale shark — one of the few reliable aggregation points in the world. Resorts are mostly mid-to-high end, with nature handled in a restrained, considered way.
- Access
- ~30–40 min by seaplane; or a ~30 min domestic flight from Malé to Dharavandhoo, then speedboat.
- Best for
- Mantas / whale sharks · Honeymoon / high end · Travelling May–Nov · Nature and marine life
- Watch out
- · Hanifaru Bay is snorkel-only, time- and headcount-limited; whether you go depends on the day’s plankton and current
- · Dec–Apr dry season has the best scenery but misses manta season
- · Almost no budget options
How Hanifaru Bay works
Reserve rules cap the bay at 80 people at a time, snorkel only (no diving), no touching. The resort decides each day whether to run a boat based on the marine biologist’s observations — when there is "soup" (a dense plankton bloom), dozens of mantas queuing to feed is a scene unique to here. To raise your odds, put the trip in Aug–Oct and pick an island close to the bay.
Island styles
Soneva Fushi represents the big-island, barefoot, slow-living approach, good for a whole week; Milaidhoo, Anantara Kihavah and The Nautilus are small, refined and service-heavy; the Westin Miriandhoo has 70 all-pool villas plus Westin wellness classes and is one of the closest islands to Hanifaru Bay, and Dusit Thani pairs Thai hospitality with a house reef often rated Baa’s best; Vakkaru, Reethi Beach, Avani+ Fares (the only kids-only restaurant in the Maldives) and Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu (natural thatched-roof villas plus a turtle rescue centre) suit families whose budget is not quite so extreme.
When to come
For the most settled weather and clearest water, Jan–Mar — but mantas are scarce then. For the big marine spectacle, Aug–Oct, at the cost of intermittent showers and the occasional drop in visibility. Baa islands mostly have a decent house reef, so even without the rain it is not a loss.
