Rasdhoo Atoll
Small atoll with a hammerhead dawn dive and a good house reef
Rasdhoo is a small atoll north of Ari, known for its early-morning hammerhead dive site and a house reef in good shape. It suits people who put diving first but do not want to pay too much. The two resorts covered here are complementary: Kuramathi is a very long natural island plus a sandbank, with a wide range of room types and friendly prices; Veligandu is a long thin island plus a signature sandbank, renovated in 2022, an adult-leaning classic honeymoon island.
- Access
- ~90 min by speedboat, or ~20 min by seaplane.
- Best for
- Diving (hammerheads) · Snorkelling · Mid-range budget · A classic honeymoon / sandbank island
- Watch out
- · A 90-min speedboat is long for anyone prone to motion sickness (a ~20 min seaplane is much easier)
- · Neither resort is a peak-luxury option - for top-end hardware go to Ari / Baa
Choosing between the two
Kuramathi: one of the longest natural islands in the Maldives (over 20 minutes to walk end to end), room types from economy beach rooms to sunset water villas, a long sandbank, an established dive centre - friendly prices, good for a family / couple wanting space and value. Veligandu: a long thin island of 100 villas plus a signature sandbank, new facilities after the 2022 major renovation, water villas / jacuzzi villas take guests 12 and over only and there is no kids' club, adult-leaning overall, one of the most classic honeymoon / anniversary choices in the Maldives.
Transfer and snorkelling
About 20 minutes by seaplane, almost no hassle; about 90 minutes by speedboat, cheaper but long for anyone prone to motion sickness. Both house reefs are entered from the beach and in good shape; Rasdhoo Atoll itself is known for its early-morning hammerhead dive site, and divers can have the dive centre arrange excursions.
