Haa Alif (North Thiladhunmathi) is the northernmost administrative atoll in the Maldives - far from Malé, with very few resorts and low guest density. Two islands are covered here: JA Manafaru (84 villas all with private pools, once a Waldorf Astoria, kids stay free) and Hideaway Beach (about 106 villas, a clear house reef and a full facility list). The pitch is far-north seclusion, at the cost of about 2 hours of transfers.

Choosing between the two

JA Manafaru (formerly a Waldorf Astoria) has 84 villas, all with private pools, seven restaurants and a family-friendly offer (kids stay free, a free seaplane upgrade on 7+ nights), but it is pricey. Hideaway Beach (on Dhonakulhi island) is bigger, with about 106 villas across beach, water and signature types, a Tripadvisor rating of 4.9 (3,400+ reviews), a clear house reef, a full facility list (diving, tennis, basketball, a golf simulator) and an optional Platinum Plus all-inclusive plan. Both are in the far north; the difference is that Manafaru leans to an all-pool, polished family stay while Hideaway Beach leans to big-island space and activities.

Getting there

Haa Alifu is among the farthest resort areas from Malé: about 70-80 minutes by seaplane, or a domestic flight of about 55 minutes to Hanimaadhoo plus a 15-20 minute speedboat. Door to door is about 2 hours and a poor connection means extra waiting; be prepared with babies or older travellers, and it is not recommended for a 4-5 day trip.
