Lhaviyani Atoll
An established dive atoll, from a classic big island to an ultra-lux private island
Lhaviyani is known for diving — the Kuredu Express channel and the Shipyard wreck are nearby. The range here is wide: Kuredu is a typical big-island resort (many rooms, many activities, moderate prices), Le Méridien is a bright mid-luxury property that opened in 2021, and Kudadoo is an ultra-lux private island of just 15 water villas on a truly all-inclusive plan.
- Access
- ~40–45 min by seaplane; some islands via a domestic flight to Madivaru airport, then a speedboat.
- Best for
- Diving · Family · Mid-range budget · Ultra-lux privacy (Kudadoo)
- Watch out
- · Most house reefs are ordinary; serious snorkelling and diving means a boat to the outer reef
- · Seaplane or domestic-flight transfer only — no direct speedboat route
- · The styles and price points within the atoll vary enormously — do not book on "Lhaviyani" alone
The islands, by tier
Kuredu is an old-school big island — a large room count, an established dive centre, and moderate prices, good for families and dive groups, at the cost of crowds and limited privacy. Atmosphere Kanifushi (opened 2013, Atmosphere Core’s first resort) is a long thin unspoilt island plus a large lagoon, and its "Platinum Plus all-inclusive (a daily excursion plus a spa treatment) plus rooms from 100 sqm" is the model of a great-value family all-inclusive, with the first pure vegetarian restaurant in the Maldives. Le Méridien (Thilamaafushi) opened in 2021 with bright design, new facilities, a padel court and a marine-conservation hub, and it is redeemable with Marriott Bonvoy. Six Senses Kanuhura is the six-star island Six Senses took over from the former Kanuhura in 2023 (renamed and renovated), with long white beaches plus "staying on three islands at once" plus Six Senses wellness, and construction on the northern end during the transition. Kudadoo goes the opposite way: 15 huge overwater residences on an "Anything, Anytime, Anywhere" truly all-inclusive plan (champagne and private dinners included), often paired with its sister island Hurawalhi.
Diving and snorkelling
The Kuredu Express channel, the Shipyard wreck and Fushivaru Thila are all in Lhaviyani, making it a strong choice for certified divers, with mantas and turtles common. But most islands have ordinary house reefs, so if you want to snorkel straight off your deck, Ari or South Malé is a safer bet.
Getting there
Lhaviyani islands are about 40–45 minutes by seaplane; some can be reached by a domestic flight to Madivaru (Lhaviyani) airport plus a speedboat. There is no direct speedboat route from Malé, so anyone prone to motion sickness should be prepared.
