Shaviyani Atoll
One of the far north atolls - few islands, quiet, whole-island resorts
Shaviyani is near the far north of the Maldives, with very few resorts, late development and a low visitor density. The two islands covered here contrast sharply: the JW Marriott is a whole-island resort with just 60 private-pool villas, known for its dining, its family policy (under-12s eat lunch and dinner free island-wide) and its staff service; Sirru Fen Fushi (formerly Fairmont) is wrapped in one of the largest resort lagoons in the Maldives at 600 hectares, built around a 200 m pool and the Coralarium underwater art gallery.
- Access
- Seaplane only, about 55 minutes (operating 07:00-16:00), with possible multi-stop pickups en route. There are Funadhoo / Maafaru domestic airports nearby, and some itineraries can use a domestic flight.
- Best for
- Quiet / low density · Families (the Marriott free-dining policy) · Photogenic (a big lagoon / pool / art) · Avoiding busier atolls
- Watch out
- · Seaplane only, about 55 minutes with frequent multi-stop pickups - not worth it for a short stay, and more weather-affected
- · Most house reefs are ordinary; serious snorkelling and diving leans on a boat
- · The two islands vary a lot in style and price - do not book on "Shaviyani" alone
Choosing between the two
The JW Marriott (Vagaru) has just 60 private-pool villas island-wide, an extremely low density, a favourite of food lovers and Marriott points collectors, with under-12s eating lunch and dinner free island-wide as its family signature. Sirru Fen Fushi (Gaakoshinbi, formerly Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi, independent since leaving Accor in 2025) is a large island plus a 600-hectare private lagoon, with a 200 m infinity pool and the half-submerged Coralarium underwater art gallery as its signatures; its Xiaohongshu reputation is 'an underrated gem'. Villas run from the beach to jungle villas set in dense forest.
Getting there and seasons
Shaviyani is in the far north, seaplane-only, about 55 minutes and often with multi-stop pickups, and the seaplane is more weather-affected, so a 3-4 night stay is not advised. There are Funadhoo / Maafaru domestic airports nearby, and some itineraries can use a domestic flight. Most house reefs are ordinary, so if you want to snorkel straight off your deck, Baa or Ari is a safer bet.
