Gaafu Alifu Atoll
A huge southern atoll — top-end all-inclusive and a rare natural freshwater lake
Gaafu Alifu (North Huvadhu) is one of the largest and deepest natural atolls in the Maldives, down south, developed late, with low guest density and plenty of dive sites. The four islands covered here span a wide range: Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is an 18-hectare island wrapped around a natural freshwater lake (almost unique in the Maldives), all private-pool villas plus a Deluxe all-inclusive plus lots of big events - a lively island; The Residence at Falhumaafushi is linked by a 6 km over-lagoon bridge to sister island Dhigurah, so facilities across both islands are shared, with contemporary design and farm-to-table dining; Park Hyatt Hadahaa is an understated eco Park Hyatt whose signature is a 360-degree reef circling the island, a Travel + Leisure Top 5 Best House Reef in Asia Pacific for 2026; Mercure Kooddoo shares its island with Kooddoo domestic airport - a 3-minute buggy to your villa on arrival with no boat - an adults-only (18+) Ultra all-inclusive value island.
- Access
- A ~55 min domestic flight from Malé to Gaafu Alifu (Kaadedhdhoo) airport, then a speedboat. Down south, so the total is longer than the central atolls.
- Best for
- All-inclusive value · Avoiding busier atolls · House reef / diving · Adults-only / honeymoon seclusion
- Watch out
- · Down south, a ~55 min domestic flight plus a speedboat (Mercure Kooddoo excepted - it shares its island with the airport, no boat) - a long total, not senior-friendly
- · There are still charges beyond the all-inclusive - check which 'AI tier' you have
- · Park Hyatt has only 2 restaurants and Mercure Kooddoo is strictly 18+ - check the restrictions before booking
Who it suits
People who want all-inclusive value and do not mind the extra transfer time of the south. Gaafu Alifu is south of Malé, reached only by a domestic flight (to Kaadedhdhoo or Kooddoo) then a speedboat, so the total runs longer than the central atolls and is not friendly for elders who dislike the hassle - but you get low guest density and good dive sites (North Huvadhu is one of the largest natural atolls in the Maldives).
Choosing among the four
Pullman Maldives Maamutaa: an 18-hectare island, a natural freshwater lake, a private pool on every villa, a Deluxe all-inclusive, lots of activities with a New Year’s Eve party as the signature - a livelier vibe, good for a family that wants plenty to do. The Residence at Falhumaafushi: 94 villas, contemporary design, a 6 km bridge to sister island Dhigurah (restaurants and facilities shared across both, effectively a two-island stay), quieter and more honeymoon-leaning. Park Hyatt Hadahaa: 51 villas, a restrained eco design, a legendary 360-degree reef circling the island - the first choice for a honeymoon that puts snorkelling and quiet first, with only 2 restaurants and pricey extras as the weak point. Mercure Kooddoo: it shares its island with Kooddoo domestic airport (a 3-minute buggy to your villa on arrival, no boat), adults only (18+), an Ultra all-inclusive (unlimited house drinks at the pool bar plus a daily minibar restock) - at around $1,100 a night one of the best-value adults all-inclusive islands in the south.
Watch
The all-inclusive comes in tiers - a la carte, drinks and excursions still cost extra beyond the base tier, so confirm which one you have before booking. Domestic flight timings to Kaadedhdhoo or Kooddoo are limited, so book an international flight that reaches Malé in the morning or midday to avoid an extra night in Malé; Mercure Kooddoo shares its island with the airport and is the only one here with no boat on arrival.
