Ari Atoll

South Ari Marine Protected Area — a chance of whale sharks year-round

Ari Atoll, especially the South Ari MPA, is famous for whale sharks all year, and has plenty of manta cleaning stations too — a top pick for divers and anyone hoping to meet the big animals. Resorts run from budget snorkelling islands to established luxury twin islands like Conrad, and North vs South Ari differ a little in transfer and style.

Access
North Ari ~25–30 min by seaplane; South Ari via a domestic flight to Maamigili airport, then a 15–20 min speedboat.
Best for
Diving / snorkelling · Whale sharks / mantas · Marine-life enthusiasts · All-inclusive value
Watch out
  • · Whale sharks are wild — sightings depend on luck and boat time, and excursions are generally pricey
  • · House-reef quality varies a lot island to island — if snorkelling matters, mind the aspect and the tide
  • · South Ari islands mostly use a two-leg transfer (domestic flight + speedboat)

Why come to Ari

The South Ari MPA is the highest-odds place in the Maldives for a year-round whale-shark sighting, and with several manta cleaning stations it is the top pick for a trip built around the big animals and diving. Islands like Vilamendhoo and Centara Grand (Machchafushi) are known for a house reef you can enter from anywhere around the island, and Kandolhu’s house reef is regularly listed among the best in the Maldives.

Island tiers

At the budget end are Vilamendhoo (4-star, no pool rooms, a divers’ favourite), Diamonds Athuruga (an Italian-style all-inclusive, only a 20-minute seaplane, a house reef with "thousands of fish") and the all-inclusive Centara Grand; on all-inclusive value, Lily Beach’s PAI Platinum Plan is repeatedly called "the most comprehensive all-inclusive in the Maldives" (Champagne by the glass plus 3 excursions), and Radisson Blu is the modern "six-star all-inclusive plus big rooms" island; in the middle is Kandolhu, small and refined with more restaurants than rooms, and V Villas Maldives at Mirihi (formerly Mirihi, 42 villas, a legendary reef circling the island), renovated and reopened by MGallery / Accor in 2026; at the top is Conrad Rangali — an established twin island open since 1997, with the Ithaa undersea restaurant and a top-tier dining line-up, and separate family and adults islands.

Transfer and season

North Ari islands are ~25–30 min by seaplane; most South Ari islands use a domestic flight to Maamigili airport plus a speedboat, so even late-arriving flights can reach the island the same day. Whale sharks are possible year-round but more likely Aug–Nov in the southwest monsoon; for the clearest water and steadiest weather, Jan–Apr.
