Laamu Atoll
One of the southernmost — world-class surf and almost no tourists, from ultra-lux to a dive lodge
Laamu is in the far south of the Maldives, with only a handful of resorts across the whole atoll, extremely low guest density and a world-class right-hand break. The two are polar opposites: Six Senses Laamu is an ultra-lux private island that takes sustainability to the limit; Reveries Diving Village is a very cheap dive lodge on the inhabited island of Gan. It suits surfers, divers, and anyone who wants to truly disconnect and does not mind spending longer to reach the island.

- A ~35–50 min domestic flight from Malé to Kadhdhoo, then a speedboat or (on Gan) a ~10 min drive. Longer total transfer than the central atolls.

- · The total transfer time is long — not for a 4–5 day trip
- · The two islands are worlds apart in style and price — do not book on "Laamu" alone
- · Islands with an ordinary house reef need a boat to the outer dive sites
Two polar opposites
Six Senses Laamu (Olhuvelifushi) is the ceiling here — extensive recycling / built-on-site materials, an observatory, a glass-floor restaurant, a woodworking studio, taking 'sustainable luxury' to the extreme, at a price to match. Reveries Diving Village is the opposite: on the inhabited island of Gan, with rooms in a building and a small beach out front, built around a professional dive operation and 'seeing the Maldives cheaply' - one of the lowest price bands in the Maldives.
Surfing and diving
Laamu has world-class right-handers (Yin Yang, Refugees and others), most consistent Sep-Apr; there are plenty of dive sites, with sharks and mantas common. House-reef quality varies a lot between islands, so "snorkel straight off your deck" is not guaranteed.
Getting there
A domestic flight from Malé to Kadhdhoo airport is about 35-50 minutes, then a speedboat to the resort, or (on Gan) a ~10 minute drive - Gan, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo are linked by causeway roads. The total is longer than the central atolls, so a 4-5 day trip is not advised.
